personnel. Addressing the service needs of vehicle owners, in a timely fashion, will still be the goal. This presentation will focus on current and soon to be released technologies that must be understood in order for every member of the automotive service industry to survive. Particular attention will be paid
to the role that jobbers, WDs and manufacturers can play in helping tomorrow's repair shop owner succeed.

As the United States and world economies recover, workforce supply and quality will become the competitive benchmark. In this presentation, representatives of industry, education and NC3 will provide the framework for understanding the critical role that career and technical education will play in training tomorrow's aftermarket workforce. Technology Enabling Transparency in the Aftermarket
Moderator: David Sturtz, CEO, RepairPal
Panelists: Greg Buckley, Partner, Buckley's Auto Care
Jim Dykstra, Owner, Dykstra's Auto Service
Consumer marketing within the auto repair industry saw little change for the past 20 years, with Yellow Pages advertising and reminder post cards dominating shop marketing budgets. The arrival of the Internet, more than a decade ago, had little impact on the way shops won and retained customers. That changed about four years ago as an array of online players became the source of consumer information and influence. Consumers have more information than ever before and are very keen to use it. These changes are accelerating and shops that have prospered in the old environment are being forced to adapt just to stay in business. This panel will discuss the types of information consumers now
have access to, how that changes their expectations for service and how some consumer-facing technicians have made progress in adapting to the new environment.
4:30 pm - 5:15 pm

8:30 am - 9:00 am
What Do Women Want?
David Portalatin, Director of Industry Analysis, NPD Group
The automotive aftermarket is a category that has been traditionally dominated by the male shopper.
However, marketers of automotive products are finally taking notice of the buying power women have traditionally held in other markets, and have long sought ways to make their products and retail environments more appealing to women. In the past, men were typically responsible for all automotive care and maintenance, including fuel purchases, but is that primacy declining? David Portalatin, NPD automotive industry expert will look at research on female shoppers and examine the questions: What influence do women have in the purchase process? How can product marketers better tap into the buying power of women? What role does social media play with so-called "Social Media Moms?" In addition, Portalatin will unveil customized research on the subject for the first time at GAAS 2011.
9:00 am - 10:00 am

What's Driving Detroit?
David Cole, Chairman Emeritus, Center for Automotive Research (CAR)
It's not an understatement to say that the U.S. auto industry has been in turmoil the past few years with
government bailouts and a steep drop in new car production. The importance of the automotive industry, and especially manufacturing in this country, will remain a key focus for policymakers, business and technology leaders, the financial world, and labor. A popular industry leader and media spokesperson, David Cole will provide important trends and changes related to the automobile
industry and society at the international, federal, state and local levels. He will help link trends from original equipment car makers and how they will impact upon the aftermarket in both the near and long term.
